R v N & Others

This is an ongoing matter at Winchester Crown Court. The trial concerns the importation of 12 1/2 tonnes of cannabis which was secreted on a tug boat which arrived in Southampton having travelled there from North Africa. The prosecution involved co-operation between SOCA and other prosecuting agencies in this country as well as the authorities in Morocco, Spain and Israel. There are now 8 individuals on trial as 4 others have previously pleaded guilty to charges arising out of this matter.

As the case involved a wealth of covert surveillance, including the interception of telecommunications in Israel, there is a large amount of material to consider. However this is not simply a large case. It is also one that has required the utilisation of expert knowledge of issues surrounding maritime practice and marine surveying."
